Along with panic and shutting down altogether, it is the Fight part of the Fight, Flight or Freeze response and it was (and still is) there for our self-preservation and survival. Nowadays however, waking up angry or having a constant low-level feeling of anger, or reacting angrily when it’s not appropriate to do so, can put added pressure on our relationships, our work, and our health. And this then adds to an existing level of stress which often results in more eruptions of anger. It’s a vicious circle.
Each night, when we sleep, we re-run the events of the day and convert them from being an emotional memory to a narrative memory. So by the morning, whatever bothered us during the day, no longer bothers us and we have control over it. However, when we have too much stuff to process, or we don’t get a good night’s sleep, or we’re too stressed anyway, and there’s not enough spare capacity in the brain to do this processing, whatever it was that bothered us, doesn’t get effectively processed, remains an emotional memory and continues to bother us.
